Creative Director and Owner at Eagre Games Inc.
First off I worked with Gary at numerous points in my career. At Westwood Studios Gary was somewhat of a concept god… everyone at the studio was trying to get him to do the concept art for their game projects – which usually was something Gary wanted to do anyway. He was creatively prolific and fast and his work always exceeded expectations. He could take a vague idea as described by a game designer and make it real… taking it in directions that were both unexpected and highly functional and the work fit each project like a glove – actually improving on the concepts he was given, time and time again.
While I was art director at Smart Bomb Interactive, I had the pleasure of working with Gary on numerous projects. I hired him for some really different kinds of concept art – from Pac Man World Rally, Snoopy Vs. The Red Baron to Scumbag Racing to a few undeveloped games in a variety of styles and game concepts. In each case Gary delivered the final product quickly and with a exceptional level of quality. And the real test of a good concept artist is how the work is portrayed in the game they worked on. The games Gary worked on with us have his visual stamp all over them. That is the highest praise I can give any artist I work with.
Gary was always willing to go the extra mile. He always met his deadlines and challenged me with some of his work in that he made me think a little differently about something he saw in any given assignment. He gives you what you need and more. I find that even now working with Gary in my capacity as president of Eagre Interactive – I have no issue just trusting he’ll solve any visual problems I have with any given assignments. No matter how big or small.
I will happily and enthusiastically give Gary my highest recommendation for his work as a concept artist.
